Diabetes Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that is caused by your blood sugar. Blood sugar is your body’s main source of energy and comes from the food you eat.

Insulin is a hormone in your body that is responsible for regulating your blood sugar. If you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t use the insulin it produces, or it doesn’t use its insulin effectively.

When diabetes is left untreated, it can cause severe health concerns.

Are there different types of diabetes?

Several types of diabetes exist, but the most common include:

Type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is often hereditary and usually occurs in children. In this case, your body doesn’t make insulin because of an infection, illness, or because of a disease affecting the pancreas. Because your body doesn’t make insulin, you need daily insulin injections.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes. It’s usually seen in middle-aged or older adults and is often caused by obesity. Ethnicity, age, sedentary lifestyle, and other health factors can also increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Gestational diabetes

It’s not unusual for some women to develop diabetes while pregnant. This type of diabetes usually goes away after pregnancy. However, if you’ve had gestational diabetes, your risk of developing type 2 in the future increases.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

Diabetes often has no symptoms. If symptoms are present, they're often shared between the two types. However, type 1 symptoms are typically more sudden and severe. These symptoms might include:

  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Dry mouth and itchy skin
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Slow healing
  • Hunger and fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Blurry vision
  • Yeast infections
  • Pain or numbness in your feet or legs

If left untreated, diabetes can lead to serious health problems and death.
